What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the science and wisdom of longevity. Ayurveda is the natural and traditional medicine of India that originated about 5,000 years ago. Chinese and Tibetan medicines both trace their roots back to Ayurveda.
The science utilizes diet/nutrition, lifestyle, daily regimen, spices, herbs, marma therapy and other holistic modalities to help people achieve optimal health. Ayurveda takes into account not only the physical body, but also ones mental and emotional characteristics. These characteristics and traits form your mind-body constitution. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We all have all three within us but our individual features and qualities combine to create our own unique combination. Discomfort, illness and disease arise when a particular dosha becomes distressed or vitiated. Ayurveda identifies the imbalance or disturbed dosha and uses natural methods to bring the body back into balance.
This medicine addresses and corrects the sick but is health centric, therefore also enhancing the healthy. According to Ayurveda there are six stages of disease. The current western model does not address the disease until it has reached the fourth or fifth stage. Through Ayurveda we can identify and correct imbalances before they manifest. Eastern medicine helps prevent disease and access optimal health.
